RANDWICK CITY COUNCIL: Compost Organics

Did you know that almost 60% of the general waste we produce is food?

Randwick City Council diverts this waste from landfill via an organics waste collection service for their residents, known as FOGO.

Their green lid FOGO bin, which stands for food organics and garden organics, help residents to recycle their food scraps along with garden waste in the one bin.

FOGO not only diverts food waste from landfill, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but it also converts the waste into compost that can be used in farms, parks, sports fields or even in Randwick City Council’s local gardens.

In one year, Randwick City Council have diverted 14,000 tonnes of FOGO waste from landfill and turned it into compost.

Who would have thought that one small change – putting food waste in the FOGO bin instead of a red general waste bin – could have so many benefits?

Compostable Packaging Accepted

In addition to the food scraps and garden waste, the FOGO system in this council accepts compostable foodservice packaging, which is great news for those of us who enjoy takeaway.

Randwick City Council launched their FOGO service in March 2021 and their community has embraced FOGO in a big way. Thanks to their efforts Randwick City Council residents are diverting an average of 1,200 tonnes of organic waste from landfill a month!

One small change that has made a huge difference!

To visualise the 14,000 tonnes of FOGO waste that Randwick City Council has helped divert from landfill think twice the weight of the steel used in the Sydney Anzac Bridge!

Food that ends up in landfill normally creates greenhouse gases. The amount of FOGO that these residents have prevented from going to landfill is the equivalent of taking 6,300 cars from the road a year.
