How did Reclaim begin?

Reclaim is a family-owned business, which started in the 1970s off the back of some friends noticing the volumes of cardboard heading to landfills. A “collection” was set up, where cardboard was loaded into a trailer and sold to organisations which had the ability and capacity to recycle the fibre. Since its inception, Reclaim has grown to over 100 employees and is proudly New Zealand’s largest privately owned supplier of recyclable resources, separating recyclable products at source, then sorting and distributing them properly to provide reprocessing manufacturers with refined quality recyclable materials.

Why do you do what you do?

What is your mission and vision for the future?
Waste is an integral part of life; it cannot be ignored. We all have an obligation to dispose of waste responsibly and contribute towards a better environment for future generations.

While we are all responsible for maintaining our quality of life, New Zealand needs someone from the recycling industry to lead the way. Reclaim aspires to become the champion of business waste recycling, regarded as the industry expert and recognised as the leading recycling brand.

We want to shift attitudes about waste. It should no longer be treated as rubbish and dismissed as worthless, it should be valued and re-used as a future resource. We want to ensure these resources are processed properly at dedicated recycling centres, rather than be buried in a landfill.

Our goal is to extend our tailored services to all businesses so they are able to achieve their waste reduction and sustainability goals. Our mission is to provide recycling guidance, advice and assurance, by assisting the recovery of as many valuable recyclable resources as possible, ensuring more recycled products are manufactured.

As a compost collection partner, Reclaim is facilitating the waste collection and commercial composting of food waste and BioPak compostable packaging. What happens after the waste is collected? What does the composting process look like at Reclaim?

Reclaim is an aggregator of material, with any compostable waste collected consolidated briefly onsite before being transferred to a commercial composting facility nearby. Reclaim actively educates clients in the separation of material at source, to ensure that all compostable waste collected is free of contamination at the point of collection.

How do you manage the risk of contamination to organic waste? I.e. non-compostable waste making its way into the waste collection bin.

Reclaim actively educates clients in the separation of material at source, to ensure that all compostable waste collected is free of contamination at the point of collection.

What is the best way for people to advocate for commercial composting in their city?

Among other benefits, commercial composting diverts waste from landfill and drives growth of natural resources and biodiversity.
