WOMADelaide is a world-renowned music and arts festival committed to minimising its environmental footprint while offering a world-class experience to attendees.
At Compost Connect, we’re proud to connect businesses, events and initiatives to compost pickup services and help divert food waste and packaging from landfills.
Amongst many of our success stories, WOMADelaide is particularly close to our heart, as they’ve truly embodied the values of community, environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Held on the traditional lands of the Kaurna People in Botanic Park / Tainmuntilla, WOMADelaide is an iconic festival celebrating the convergence of global cultures through music, art, dance, ideas and community engagement.
Running since 1992, today WOMADelaide truly acknowledges its responsibility to protect and preserve the neutral beauty of the area.
WOMADelaide acts as a shining example of what the future of large-scale community events and gatherings should look like.
WOMADelaide has pioneered sustainability efforts by replacing disposable cups with reusable and compostable alternatives. Through this initiative, the festival has:
WOMADelaide is committed to achieving a zero-waste-to-landfill status. Currently diverting 97.5% of waste away from landfills, they’re almost there!
The festival’s waste management strategy focuses on using biodegradable and recyclable materials. Compostable cups, utensils, and packaging are mandated, and waste is sorted on-site to make sure it’s properly disposed of.
WOMADelaide is an example of the circular economy in action. In 2014, they introduced fully compostable cups to all bars, as well as a range of other compostable food packaging options. But more than that, having the right waste bins on-site makes sure each product is properly disposed of.
Not only that, WOMADelaide offers reusable cups and water bottles, eliminating the sale of single-use plastic bottles.
WOMADelaide sets an incredible example of how large-scale events can seamlessly combine entertainment and environmental responsibility.
WOMADelaide’s partnership with Greening Australia, waste reduction initiatives, and overall commitment to sustainability should inspire and shake up other large-scale events in Australia, showing that a world-class event and sustainability can exist in harmony.
